It takes a mental shift to make a major change.
When you take on my 10-week Decluttering Programme…
… I ask you to make a commitment…
…to regular decluttering sessions.
The 21 Day Declutter…
..involves a 30 minute task every day for three weeks.
Why?
Because, when it comes to something extra…
…a new thing to do,…
…particularly if that thing is challenging…
…unless you consciously build time into your schedule…
…it ain’t gonna get done.
You know this, right?
Me too!
And yet we fool ourselves again and again…
… We tell ourselves we’ll get that new thing done.
“I’ll fit it in around the usual stuff I do”.
Right?
Yep, me too!
I’m talking about my upcoming Digital Decluttering video course.
In January, I let you know that an influx of face-to-face clients had delayed its production…
…and that my plan was to publish the course at the end of March.
Things have settled down now…
…and I’m focused on the course again.
In the last couple of weeks, I’ve done more filming…
…been getting my head around screen capture software…
…and begun editing and uploading lectures.
Exciting!
But…
…my self-imposed March deadline is looming…
…and there’s still a lot to do.
Last week, I made that mental shift…
…and faced facts.
I am not going to get it done in time…
…by fitting working on it into my usual schedule.
To progress my singing…
…after months of thinking I’d practice as and when…
…that mental shift led to me starting to get up half an hour earlier…
…to practice as part of my morning routine.
And now that’s normality for me.
And last week, I had a mental shift about the course…
…and recognised that I have to apply the same principle.
Launching before April calls for a significant change to my routine.
Even more than singing because…
…it’s going to take more than half an hour a day.
So until it’s published…
…it’s no badminton for me.
If you’re a regular reader, you’ll know that HURTS!
AND it’ll be worth it.
Apart from anything else, I’m not giving up my beloved badminton for nothing!
This course is going to be as good as I can possibly make it.
And, to get back to the subject of decluttering and organising…
…are you telling yourself you’ll do it as and when?
And, if so, how’s that going?
Look, it might be going great! (Comment below to share the secret of your success).
But, if it’s not…
…if you’ve been telling yourself for – how long?…
…that you can fit it around the other stuff you do…
…without making any significant changes to your routine…
…and making little or no progress…
…what mental shift do you need to make to change things?
Comment below and let me know.
PS I learned a second valuable lesson from making my first three courses (Declutter Your Bedroom, Declutter Paper and Paperwork, Declutter Sentimental Stuff). I’m putting it into practice with this course – and I’ll share it with you next week so watch this space.
I know I need to drop things to fit in all the decluttering I need to do, but I don’t know what or how…I’ve been stuck for a long time! I have ADHD too which doesn’t help. Something else always takes priority, I find it hard to stick to a plan, and procrastinate with the organisational things that I find very difficult. It’s chaos…!!
I hear you, Sarah. ADHD can make it difficult to realise your plans, especially when it’s something you find challenging. Are you planning to do too much? Could you plan to do something small and realistic? I know there’s a lot to do but every step on the way is progress and seeing yourself make progress will motivate you.
